Are you ready for DOT Week 2026?
One of the transportation industry’s most important safety events each year is the CVSA International Roadcheck, also known as DOT Week. This annual effort helps ensure trucks and drivers are operating safely and in compliance. For shippers, the increased inspections can influence capacity, rates and transit times, making preparation especially important.
This year, DOT Week is scheduled for May 12-14, 2026, which means now is the time to plan. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s International Roadcheck, and the steps you can take to keep your supply chain moving.
DOT Week 2026 at a glance
What is DOT Week?
The CVSA International Roadcheck, sometimes called DOT or Blitz Week, is a three-day commercial vehicle safety enforcement event led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
When and where does it happen?
DOT Week is May 12-14, 2026, with inspections happening at weigh stations, inspection sites and roadside pull-offs across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
What’s the purpose of these inspections?
Inspectors verify that commercial vehicles and drivers meet established safety requirements by checking:
Driver qualifications (licenses, medical certificates, skills, etc.)
Vehicle mechanical fitness (brakes, lighting, steering, etc.)
2026 focus area: electronic logging device (ELD) tampering and cargo securement
How does this event impact freight transportation?
While DOT Week is short in duration, the increased inspection activity can temporarily affect the freight market.
Longer transit times. Level I inspections take 30-60 minutes, and the CVSA averages close to 15 inspections per minute, increasing the likelihood of delays.
Reduced capacity. Some drivers sit out DOT Week, and vehicles placed out of service remain off the road until violations are resolved. In 2025, roughly one out of every five vehicles inspected was taken out of service.
Higher rates. With fewer trucks available, rates often increase during and shortly after DOT Week.
How shippers can prepare
While DOT inspections are conducted at the carrier and driver level, their impact can extend across the supply chain. Thoughtful planning can help minimize disruption and keep freight moving. Consider these steps as the inspection blitz approaches:
Secure capacity early
Booking shipments well in advance helps lock in your transportation option before availability tightens and rates increase.
Leverage a strong, reliable carrier network
Using a logistics provider with a broad, vetted carrier network increases your access to well-maintained equipment and experienced drivers, giving you greater flexibility when capacity tightens.
Build buffer time into schedules
Work with your logistics partner to add time to your pickup and delivery schedules to absorb any potential delays without missing customer commitments.
Adjust capacity strategies
Being able to shift modes, reroute freight or secure backup capacity can help keep shipments moving when conditions are unpredictable.
Plan for possible rate increases
DOT Week has historically led to short-term rate increases. Planning for this variability in advance helps avoid surprises.
Prioritize critical freight
When possible, move crucial shipments before DOT Week and plan lower-priority freight for during inspections.
Work with reliable logistics partners
Transportation providers with strong safety programs and well-maintained equipment are less likely to experience out-of-service interruptions, reducing overall risk.
